Character Name: Hermann Gottlieb

Personality:
Hermann is, in a lot of ways, your generic fussy academic. He is rather prone to being a perfectionist, with chalkboards covered in neatly-written equations and an absolute inability to abide any entrails or goop or anything from Newt's side of the lab to encroach upon his side. There is a line down the middle of their shared lab. It probably wasn't painted there for them, but it's quite possible that the room they were given was chosen specifically because it would be easy to divide into "Hermann's Lab" and "Newt's Lab".
That sort of perfectionism spills over into his work, as well. He is meticulous, preferring maths and numbers where everything is calculable, where probabilities have precise values and his projections are almost certain. When he's proven wrong about something, it causes him notable distress, such as his pre-occupation with the number of kaiju that came through the rift while assisting Newt with preparing to drift with a recently-deceased infant kaiju, and how it was supposed to be what he'd projected, but it hadn't turned out that way. (It ended up with him being correct, the third just came through as a trap when the jaegers arrived at the Breach.)
Largely because of his own upbringing and intelligence, Hermann does have a tendency to be a bit on the elitist side - his projections are as scientifically sound as possible, while Newt is running on what he considers less concrete information and wild speculation, which makes Newt's theories less valid/respectable than his. He's a very "old school" type of person, in that he likes people to be normal and predictable and fit in boxes he's designed for them, which makes people like Newt (unconventional, unpredictable, and very hard to fit in a box) rub him completely the wrong way. Which is not to say that he does it intentionally, or that he can't get past his elitist streak, but it's a work in progress.
All of these traits kind of condense to make him not always a very social person, or a fun person to be around. His socialization experience is spotty, and despite having fallen in love with and married the most understanding woman in the world, he is usually gruff at best and crotchety at worst. Every interaction he has with anyone in the film is awash with awkward social stumbling or irritation. He can be a genuinely lovely person to be around… if he likes you and feels comfortable with you and isn't around other people and isn't irritated by something.
As an offshoot of his rather unsociable nature, he also tends to be bad at expressing positive emotions about people he cares about. Fondness, compassion, encouragement, comfort - all of these things are feelings he feels or wants to express, but he finds the actual expression of those things to be difficult. When he finds Newt has drifted with the kaiju brain, he gets very frightened and worried, and then (once Newt is clearly going to be okay) proceeded to berate and insult him, rather than expressing the actual obvious concern and relief he felt.
But at the end of the day, Hermann is a deeply caring person who feels very strongly, especially about the people he cares about. He has a wife he adores and a child on the way. Despite his usual irritation with Newt, he clearly cares about his well-being, and once he'd had a couple hours to come to terms with the fact that Newt was right and was going to drift again, Hermann didn't hesitate to offer to join in the second drift and share the neural load, to make it easier for Newt and more likely that it would be successful.
